UK Foreign Secretary Lammy visits Germany

Berlin and London looking at closer ties between UK and EU

Berlin (dpa) – Germany and United Kingdom consider closer ties between UK and EU. “We are working with the new UK government to see how the UK can move closer to the EU again,” announced the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin during new UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s inaugural visit to meet Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. There is no talk of a return to the EU or of a customs union, however.

The Labour government wants to enter into a security pact with the EU that would also encompass the areas of energy and climate, as well as closer cooperation in the defence sector. The Federal Foreign Office said it was also a question of making support for Ukraine more effective. The aim was to make Europe more resilient and to strengthen the European pillar of NATO. Be it in the areas of science, culture or security – Germany and the UK were working closely together.
